A free toolkit for teaching first aid
The resources on this site will help you teach children and young people first aid. The toolkit explores kindness, keeping safe and well-being. It gives children and young people the confidence to help others.
Learning with First Aid Champions
The approach to teaching first aid is learner-centred and interactive, following a ‘learn – practise – share’ structure for use in group settings. Learners focus on one key action to take for each first aid skill by following simple steps. Children and young people can also access this site’s online resources independently to support their learning.
Teaching first aid
You don’t need extra training to deliver first aid sessions. You’ll find a variety of activities, films, PowerPoint presentations, quizzes and photographs to create engaging first aid learning sessions. You choose which activities and materials work best for your group.

Teaching first aid at primary (children aged 5 – 11)
Each module follows a learn and practise approach, with interactive content and downloadable teaching activities. Learners will develop understanding, and then try it out.
The primary resource includes:
- Introductory activities that familiarise learners with the Red Cross, the characters the children will learn with, and why first aid is important.
- First aid skills that show what key action to take when someone needs first aid.
- Kindness and coping learning that focuses on emotions, how to keep calm, decision making and words of kindness and comfort.
- Safety - learn how to call 999, keep safe when helping others and spot dangers.
- Share - ideas for children to share their learning with others.

Teaching first aid at secondary (young people aged 11-18)
Each module follows a learn and practise approach, with interactive content and downloadable teaching activities. Learners will develop understanding, and then try it out.
The secondary resource includes:
- Introductory activities that introduce the Red Cross and why first aid is important
- First aid skills - explore seventeen different first aid skills and what key action to take when someone needs first aid
- Helping others - learn what inspires people to help and the qualities of those that do
- Safety and well-being - focus on calling 999, emotional and practical first aid, staying safe and coping techniques to help keep calm
- Share and remember - ideas for young people to consolidate and then share their learning with others.
