Coping skills

Think about the word ‘coping’, what do you think it means? Write down your definition of coping.

Now think of and write down one thing someone might do to cope if they were in a situation that they might find challenging. Think about something immediate they could do to help themselves cope in a situation where someone needed first aid e.g. taking a deep breath.

Now think about what someone might do to cope in the longer term e.g. listen to music or spend time on their favourite hobby or with friends.

Now look at the Oxford English Dictionary definition of coping: “to deal effectively with something difficult.” This is one definition of coping. Does it match your definition?

Does it cover what you were thinking? Does it have enough detail? Is there anything you would change or add? Can it be applied to a range of situations?

When could someone use their coping skills? What kind of situations?

Try this breathing technique called "bubble breathing"

Close your eyes and notice your breathing. Take a deep breath in and slowly release it out of your mouth, imagining you are blowing into a large bubble that is increasing in size

Breath in and out again, blowing the bubble even bigger. Keep doing this until you feel calmer

How did that make you feel? When could someone use this breathing technique in their life?
